Through an individual TCM diagosis, I look at your body as a whole — sleep, appetite, energy, what’s going on for you day to day — so your treatment is grounded in the full picture, not just the symptom in front of us. Each session is then adapted to your current state and needs.

When Acupuncture May Not Be Appropriate for Pregnancy-Related Nausea

1. Severe hyperemesis gravidarum with warning signs

If pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting has progressed to hyperemesis gravidarum and any of the following symptoms are present, seek medical attention promptly for appropriate treatment such as fluids or medication. Do not delay necessary medical care while waiting for acupuncture:

Unable to keep fluids or food down: Unable to drink or eat for more than 24 hours, with signs of significant dehydration such as extremely dry lips, reduced urination or very dark urine, or decreased skin elasticity.
Significant weight loss: More than 5% loss of pre-pregnancy body weight.
Other concerning symptoms: Severe headache, blurred vision, persistent high fever, palpitations, or severe dizziness and weakness.

2. High-risk pregnancy or signs of threatened miscarriage or preterm labour

The following situations require medical assessment. Acupuncture should not be used as a substitute for obstetric care:

Signs of threatened miscarriage or preterm labour: Vaginal bleeding, brown discharge, or persistent lower abdominal pressure or pain during pregnancy.
History of recurrent miscarriage: A history of multiple unexplained miscarriages or preterm births.
Serious pregnancy complications: Diagnosed placenta previa, placental abruption, severe pre-eclampsia, or other high-risk pregnancy conditions.

3. Particular physical or psychological states at the time of treatment

Extreme physical states: Severe hunger, profuse sweating, extreme fatigue, significant dehydration, circulatory collapse, or intense psychological distress or fear.
Severe needle phobia: If a pregnant person is unable to tolerate acupuncture because of intense fear of needles, forcing treatment may cause more distress than benefit.

4. Certain underlying medical conditions

Bleeding or clotting disorders: Severe blood disorders or the use of anticoagulant medication for other medical reasons.
Blood-borne infections: Such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, or syphilis.
